Jeep: Pulling the Head
By Jason Bolonski
The head of the engine was a victim of serveral stripped out threads. It was also covered in burnt on oil around the rockers and valves. Pulling the head to get it on the workbench was by best option to get everything cleaned up.
Removing the Manifolds
The intake and exhaust manifolds are bolted together on the AMC258. I was able to lift out both manifolds and the carburator after disconnecting the fuel lines and throttle cable.
The the manifolds removed you can see the intake and exhaust ports on the head.
It looks like there was only half the gasket.
Cleanup
I decied to do a little cleaning while I could access the side of the engine and get the casting numbers. You can see some of the original paint.
Head Removal
I used an overhead hoist to carefully lift the head out of the jeep and put it on the bench.
I put a piece of wood over the cylinders to protect them while the head is off.
Valve Seal Test
I read about a technique to test for valve seals by filling them with water and then blowing air into the manifold holes. If there are no bubbles and if the water stays overnight then your valves are sealing well.
It sounds legit. So…
No bubbles and no loss of water. So, I think the valves are sealing.
Stripped Threads
The valve cover threads were in need of help since many were stripped out. And the front bolt for the manifold was missing and the threads were stripped.
